Flora and The fauna
The before sea the coast of the extreme heads western of the Sicily, between Trapani and Marsala, is studded of two groups of islands. To the first one, that one of the Egadi, can be given good to the name of Archipelago straight; the second is composed of three isolotti that they emerge to little hundreds of meters from the coast, a sea of variable depth between cm 25 and m 2,50: therefore one pond; and the islands, almost deserted, nearly an extension of the mainland. Therefore, from always, the complex has been called the Stagnone and not “archipelago”.
Archipelago of the Egadi
In order of magnitude it is composed of:
Favignana kmq 19,38
Marettimo kmq 12
Levanzo kmq 5,82
Between Levanzo and the trapanese coast emerges to fior of water two isolotti of Ant (length m 680), on which the sluices of omonima the Tonnara rise by now manufactured, and Maraone (length m 600), desert and completely flat.
Marettimo is therefore the piú far from the sicialian coast it is a lot distant also from the others two islands sisters. They separate from Head Bon, in Tunisia, only 70 miles of sea. Such geographic position is determining of the character and the traditions of the inhabitants that can consider themselves, as will be said better later on, one small absolutely independent ethnic minority regarding the other islands, although to they amministrativarnente tied. Favignana, that it is the understood one them of the Egadi, is center of the town hall, has one equal surface to the sum of superficial of the others the two islands. Three are the salienti aspects of the Archipelago: the tufacea geologic conformation of Favignana that of ago one of the interesting and evocative islands piú of our seas, with with the indeed exceptional beauty of the full of rocks walls of the far Marettimo; the second peculiarity is in the strategic position, nearly that the three islands were bastions place to you to beautiful mail to defend Bottoming drills and its coasts creating an ideal defensible port from external attacks: that influí in order at least two millenia on the history of the Arcipeiago. Third party common aspect to the three islands is the great pescosità of the sea that elesse the peach like prevailing activity of these populations, in particular that one of the tonno, than the famous yields in all Mediterranean.
This area is important also from the historical-archaeological point of view, inasmuch as in the course of the First Punica War, on the before waters Favignana, the naval battle between Cartaginesi and Romani, gained was carried out in the 241 A.C from consul Lutazio Catulo. A battle a lot cruenta that the blood of the contendenti reddened the sea and the place where carried out assumed the name of CalaRossa. Also for this it is enough easy to find on the bottom the rests of sunk ships and their contents.
